Perhaps one solution would be to allow people to sit in business class for free if no seats are available without a seat companion, or to have a few slightly larger seats on every plane (though I do see how this could be uncomfortable or embarassing too). Also, it's not just people who are heavy - tall people have the same problem. I've seen people who are 6'7" be required to purchase a business class seat since they don't fit.
