Furbaby Friday…Sick Helper…

My dog is the best dog when it comes to being sick. Me or her. Number one she has tummy issues always has, and has learned throw up on linoleum or tile instead of carpet. Which let me tell you is immensely helpful. But what she is also great with is just lying there being a good snuggle pup.

When I am truly down and out like I have been all week she truly shines. When I am on the couch she lays there with her head on my leg. If I am in bed she sleeps on the pillow next to me. If I get a fever, she will move so she doesn’t get too hot, but will slide over but not very far out of her watchful eye. She doesn’t get up to drink water, because she doesn’t want to disturb me, and she doesn’t ask to go the bathroom (no she just doesn’t go find a place). Take yesterday for example, she went to the restroom when my roommate woke up and he took her out at 5:30am. My friend T didn’t come over and let her out until 3:30pm. Which was no problem whatsoever. The key is just not to ask her if she wants to go. It’s like if no one asks her she forgets.

The only way she is not awesome is if you have to have a conversation with the toilet Gods. For whatever reason, in her mind, this means it’s time to lick me. Which is less than cool. But overall, you got to admit she is one awesome Fur Baby. When I get better I will be sure and make her favorite peanut butter and oatmeal treats.

Peanut Butter and Oatmeal Dog Treats

2 TBSP flaxseed meal
1 TBSP olive oil
1 cup water
1/2 cup natural peanut butter
1 cup oatmeal
2 cups whole wheat flour

Mix all the ingredients together. Roll on a floured surface to 1/4 inch thick, adding flour or water as needed. Cut with a cookie cutter (we just make squares). Bake at 300F for 20 minutes. Turn off the oven and leave the treats for several hours or overnight in the oven.

  1. What a sweetie! My golden is also a perfect snuggle pup. Does everything yours does, LOL. And also, as long as you don’t ask him “do you want to go potty?”, he won’t bother you when you don’t feel well.

Now, if he could just fetch ice water, wow…

I hope you’re feeling better soon.

  2. How adorable!

My Cavalier likes to do almost the same thing. We are getting along great and he seems happy… Then, he decides to lick my feet. He thinks it’s awesome, but, somehow, it just doesn’t rub me the right way.

Still, I’m going to make these for him tonight!

  3. Awe; what a sweet FurBaby you have!

  4. I’m so sorry that you’re feeling so awful! What a blessing to have your sweet pup, even if she can’t hold your hair back for you.

  5. I will have to try this recipe out on my pup this weekend. Hope you feel better soon.

  6. Oh my gosh, I wish we could teach our dog not to throw up on the carpet.

Being sick sucks, but having good pets is nice. Hope you feel better soon.

  7. so precious! sounds a lot like my Butchy baby who always checks on me and comforts me when i’m sick. (and she’s learned about only throwing up on the hardwood as well!) what would we do without our little ones? i have no idea! When I had mono a few years ago i would just lay there forever and she would watch me, and then if she had gone to do something all i needed to say is “mommy needs you!” and she would come running to give me cuddles & kisses :)

  8. A couple years of telling our older dog to ‘go to bed’ after he was sick [to allow us time to clean up without him in the way] was all it took for him to learn to just throw up in his crate in the first place. Now we never have to worry about cleaning it up from the carpet, lol. Well, from him anyway — now to teach the puppy…

  9. Makes me miss my dog! I love cuddling with her, although I usually end up covered in dog hair. O well. x

  10. Pets are the BEST when you’re sick! Hope you keep improving and get through this patch as well. Sending good thought your way!

  11. hey..my doggie and yours are quite alike, May I be a matchmaker between them if you don’t mind :P
You and your little girlie looks so fond of each other that so it erased my anger..that developed step by step each time you made a post; making fun of eating disorders :/
I’m a diognosed ”Anorexic, Purging type”..And a Culinary arts student, not sure which comes first..anyway just wanted to give you a notice it is not ”funny” we’re suffering, and as you can see we’re not ‘horrible and mean’ as portrayed-if we were, would I still be reading your every post?
Kisses to your puppy-not you..Though I do wish you get well soon :)

  12. Animals have an instinct about their humans’ feeling ill.Unfortunately, I don’t have a dog, but do have two cats and they know that when I’m lying down, I’m not feeling well and make sure to cuddle up beside me. Love our furry pets!

  13. Melissa says:

Thanks for the treat recipe! I have 3 4-legged children and they’re good when I’m sick, too. Hope you’re on the mend!

  14. I know what you mean, I have had the stomach flu all week and my puppy is the same way except for the fact that she doesn’t understand how big she is.I will have to make those for her. I hope you feel better soon. :)

  15. Aaaw…she is so sweet, I hope you’ll get better soon.

  16. My Bella is great when I am sick. She can spend 12 hours on the couch with me and be perfectly content. Nothing is worse than being alone and sick. Pups make it slightly more tolerable.

  17. Awwwh furbaby. She loves you so much.

  18. Peabody says:

@Kydoime- interesting that you think I make fun of eating disorders. I actually volunteer with Pro-Ana girls. I tell girls who starve themselves that they will be sad to learn that when they go down a size it doesn’t make their life any better. And as to whether you are anoreix or culinary arts student first. I would say neither, I would say human being.

  19. Hula used to be good about making sure that she got to a hard surface to throw up too. I love helpful pets.
