Sense of community…

snickerdoodlecreambrulee1

I belong to a page on FB for food bloggers to ask other food bloggers questions. It’s been a pretty good resource for things and it was a way to figure out who was going to BlogHerFood and what not. And we started a discussion about building community. I get a lot of beginner bloggers asking me how to get traffic? How to build a community? They want to know how I get brands to work with me. They never like my answer of time and be yourself. There are very few overnight sensations in the food blogging world. Bakerella was because no one was doing what she was doing. She is the master of all things cute cake pops. I hate cake pops but love her site just to look at what things she can come up with. And then there is Ree of course. The woman built a dynasty. That won’t ever be me (I wrote about it here). I’m okay with that. I find it funny when they say they want to build a community. I’m not totally sure they do. I think they want a cookbook. I think they want the traffic. I … [Read more...]

That’s what friends are for…

Left in the comments by one of my most favorite people of all time was a request for more snickerdoodle stuff. So since I do big puffy heart her I am going to oblige her. That and it’s not too hard to convince me to make something snickerdoodle flavored (twist my arm). It’s funny that the vast majority of people who I adore and have been positive influences in my life (with the exception of my hockey peeps…MDP included) have all come as a result of this blog. If nothing else ever comes from me having this blog, the friendships that I have made from it have made any amount of time spent keeping this blog a float all worthwhile. It’s even is worth all the caramel burns. :) They (whoever THEY are) say that the Internet often isolates and keeps people from having real life relationships. I can see that in some ways. I think what is nice about the Internet is the fact that it allows me to search out and find people who I have things in common with or are just good peeps that I … [Read more...]

The secret life of buttercream…

There is a saying about people live three lives: their public life, their private life, and their secret life. I’m here to talk about adding a subclass to the public life: their Facebook/Pinterest life. I am not immune to this at all. I mean if people only followed me on Pinterest they would have expected me to show up to the conference in a Burberry trench coat and Louboutin heels. But what they got was a tennis shoe wearing gal dressed out in jeans and a hoodie…and oh yeah an Optimus Prime t-shirt (I’m more than meets the eye :P ). I’m not really talking about the surface stuff. Surely I don’t believe that people who pin the 400 square foot laundry room with miles of shelves and a sink in it are planning a redo of their home anytime soon to add that. They just WISH they had that. Who doesn’t? Well, really if we are wishing, I wish to have someone just come do my laundry…screw having a nice laundry room. :D I’m talking more about the people who post stuff about … [Read more...]

Lucky number 7….

Happy Birthday little blog! Or anniversary I can never really tell which it is. Pick one I guess and go with that. 7 years ago today I decided my new hobby should be food blogging. I’m freshly back from BlogHerFood12 and can tell you that nothing makes you know how insignificant you are in the blog world like going to a food bloggers conference these days. Wow. Hundreds and hundreds of people with what seems to be two things as their objectives: how do I get a cookbook deal and how to get sponsors. I however was there to meet people. Two years ago when I went to IFBC here in Seattle it seemed like more people were there to meet other bloggers. Now it seemed like people just consider other bloggers competition. Let me tell you folks I am in competition with no one. I write my blog for me. If others think it is good and want to read it all the better. :) I felt at times as if I was in a really bad speed dating conference. All these people who were *dying to meet me* talked to me … [Read more...]
