Anything you can do….

I have a habit, not a good one, not a bad one…just a habit of seeing something or tasting something and knowing that I can make it better…or at least for cheaper. Case in point: the other day I walked by ice cream isle in search of these non-dairy bon bon type things that I like and I saw a tiny, tiny jar of Black Raspberry and Chocolate ice cream and saw the price tag of almost $7 and nearly fell over.

The flavor sounded awesome the price tag on the other hand was ridiculous. I’m sure it’s yummy ice cream but wow. I knew I could make about 5 times that amount for the same price and so I set out to do it. I had to use a combo of black raspberries and tayberries as I ate too many of the black raspberries without thinking. :) They work just as good. Needless to say I made the batch which makes 1 quart for around $2.20. So clearly I made more for less. And let me tell you that if this taste ANYTHING like the original. OMG. My jeans are thanking me so much for being allergic to dairy. I seriously swallowed four allergy pills just to have a couple spoonfuls…it was that good.

Hopefully this little treat will help you keep cool. I know it seems better than fighting with your kids over a spot in the kiddie pool. :P Though running through the sprinklers is always fun! Regardless of how you do it stay cool and for goodness sake go out and buy and ice cream maker ( I own the older version of Cuisinart ICE-21 Frozen Yogurt-Ice Cream & Sorbet Maker, White. You are probably going to see a TON of recipes for it in this heat.

  4. I hate how ice cream can be so expensive for just the little pints. I guess it all has to do with brands :/ Anyways, I love the idea of this ice cream! It looks delicious. And I’m seeing so many ice cream recipes and I don’t have an ice cream maker, I’m really tempted to go get an ice cream maker now. The only thing stopping me is the four day road trip I’m taking to get to college. I don’t think there will be room for the ice cream maker. Grrr. White-girl problems :P

    P.S. I LOVE the little ice cream cup you chose to put the ice cream in! It looks like something youd get in an ice cream parlor :)

  6. My husband has just learned he may be having excessive acid reflux due to dairy and has to remove it from his diet. He LOVES his ice cream, but I have no idea how to make it without the diary. Your recipes are simple and delicious, do you have any suggestions beyond buying the rice-dream ice cream??

  7. Yum, yum, yum! I’m looking out the window this morning at Discovery Bay and fog that hasn’t lifted since I got up at 6am, though. Brrrr! Haha. It’s gorgeous here — quiet and peaceful. This is making me think of a treat later this afternoon WHEN it warms up!

  10. I do not know if the ice cream you saw was Graeters (this is their signature flavor and it is AMAZING) but if this is anything close to it I will be very excited.

  11. I find that I don’t use my ice cream maker as much as I would like to. The bowl is always in the freezer waiting to be used, but I never seem to get at it. Probably because I don’t keep cream in my house. But Blackberries are on sale this week, so I might have to pick some up.
    I frequent Baskin Robbins often enough and yeah, it ain’t cheap, but it’s great for portion control as I could eat a bucket of ice cream in a sitting.
    And your ice cream cups = best hostess ever :).

  12. I was also wondering if it was Graeters because that is their signature. I’m so happy I live within walking distance of one! I’m not a black raspberry chip fan but I love me some Graeters chips!

  15. I’m sure this is good, great in fact, but if you’re trying to one-up Graeters you’ve got to have the mammoth Peters semi-sweet chocolate chunks, the things are so big they could probably clog an ice cream machine. Then I think the mascarpone will give you the edge.

  16. When I saw that first photo I could have sworn it was from a real ice cream parlor! Nicely done. Haven’t seen any black raspberries around here but I’ll keep checking.
