Like Taffy…

No, this cake has nothing to do with Taffy. But taffy is what I feel like. I feel like I am being pulled in 20 different directions lately. And what does that leave me, besides being tired? It leaves me doing a whole lot of stuff mediocre and all round half ass. And oh how I hate that. I focus on one thing, all the others go on the back burner. So then I start to concentrate on something else, but then the first thing I was focusing on is now going to crap. And it seems to be a never ending cycle as of late. I've got cookbooks to review, magazine pictures to shoot, products to feature, a insanely dirty house to clean, a large pile of laundry that mocks me daily, baking for my blog, baking for my side project. And well, none of it is being done. So with my life in perpetual mediocrity I decided to stick with something simple. Yes, I know, another loaf cake. What can I say, they are easy, and you don't have to frost them. One thing people always bug me about is why don't I make a … [Read more...]

Bringing back Winter…

Odd week. Started off Monday with my husband coming home and telling me that they disbanded his group at work and starting Tuesday he would be in a new group. Good news, he still has a job. Bad new, whoa, out of left field. Moving on, thanks to all of those who checked out my kitchen over at Use Real Butter. Yes, I know I am spoiled and have a big kitchen. Realize that I had small apartment kitchens all my life, so I earned it. ;) Also, many people said they were bummed that the picture of me was not of me in my hockey gear. So here you go (see below). There is me at April Ice, a tournament held in Calgary, Alberta, back in 2004. I was still living in Phoenix at the time (notice the logo). Starting tomorrow my parents arrive so I will be MIA some more. Sorry. Spring tried to come around these parts. We had unseasonable warm weather and it made everyone happy but me. So to bring the cold weather back (there is even rumors of snow on Monday) I made some cocoa and marshmallows with a … [Read more...]

Come into the light…

So for the longest time I was always a natural light girl for food photography. But the reality is that I just don't live in a region that gets much light in the Winter and it was becoming a drag. Plus I keep such odd hours, often baking at one or two in the morning. I don't want to wait around until the next day to shoot, and sometimes I can't wait depending what it is. I had seen a great review over at Steamy Kitchen about Lowel EGO lights. I decided to put those on my Christmas list. Santa was nice and brought them to me. I must say they have changed my life. It's so wonderful to know that I can bake whenever I want because I can shoot whenever I want. I got into a discussion on a food photography thread about using the lights. Most people were opposed to using any lights of any sorts. Said it made a huge difference and didn't look right. So as a experiment I took pictures of my tarts using both natural light and my EGO lights and if you would like to play along, go ahead and … [Read more...]

Ordinary people….

I have a new form of people watching now. I guess it will help the time go by. I got my first round of allergy shots today. Yep, they hurt. But at least the nurse didn't lie to me, she told me they would hurt. She was right. After you get allergy shots you have to sit around and wait for 30 minutes to make sure you don't have a reaction to them. And even though I did bring a book to read I found myself people watching far more than reading. See the waiting area is right next to the exit. We must be next to some section where there are a lot of elderly people. And well, they are the funniest of all. My favorite today was the woman that reminded me of my grandmother. My grandmother always had her hair covered up with a plastic bag almost everywhere she went if the weather was bad or looked bad. This was to prevent her hair from being ruined and looking bad. It never seemed to occur to her that wearing a grocery sack from the produce department on your head would look bad. I got to … [Read more...]
