Operation Wedding Cake…

Today I started what I am calling Operation Wedding Cake. Many a person asks me to make them a wedding cake. I laugh. They look puzzled. I tell them I can’t decorate a cake. They don’t believe me. I then ask them if they have ever eaten a layer cake that I have made. And no one can really say that they have. Because I don’t make them often and if I do it’s never full size. I can’t frost. I can frost cupcakes just fine because there is a piping bag to help. But cake. Cake is my nemesis. I feel so bad about the fact that I can’t help people out (and I hate disappointing people) so I decide to start Operation Wedding Cake. I have zero desire to go into the wedding cake world. But I would love to help my friends out who are on a tight budget and ask me to make a cake for them. So I am giving myself a year to practice cakes. Lucky number 7….

Happy Birthday little blog! Or anniversary I can never really tell which it is. Pick one I guess and go with that. 7 years ago today I decided my new hobby should be food blogging. I’m freshly back from BlogHerFood12 and can tell you that nothing makes you know how insignificant you are in the blog world like going to a food bloggers conference these days. Wow. Hundreds and hundreds of people with what seems to be two things as their objectives: how do I get a cookbook deal and how to get sponsors. I however was there to meet people. Two years ago when I went to IFBC here in Seattle it seemed like more people were there to meet other bloggers. Now it seemed like people just consider other bloggers competition. Let me tell you folks I am in competition with no one. I write my blog for me. If others think it is good and want to read it all the better. :) I felt at times as if I was in a really bad speed dating conference. You want this cake…

They say that comparison is a joy thief and whoever “they” are certainly got that right. Comparison is what makes women/men hate their bodies, where they live, what car they drive, what shoe is on their foot, etc. And it makes the food blogger get down on their blog. There have been quite a few what I will call old school food bloggers (meaning we have been around awhile) feeling not so great about their blogs or their traffic…or in my case how many people comment. Lots of people have food blogs. I mean LOTS. In just shy of two months this blog will be turning 7. Seven years of my life writing a blog about food, hockey, and sitting around in my sweatpants (they are really nice sweatpants in my defense). It makes me question at what point do I stop blogging? And it causes me to ask the question why did I start blogging in the first place? I started blogging because I was bored at home and was married to a picky eater and needed a creative outlet. A series of random letters…. Dear IRS, I owe you money. And while I won’t be sending you that money on Sunday I do need to get on payment plan. I filled out my taxes but you won’t let me finish them saying that I have more forms to fill out. BUT those forms aren’t available yet. Ummm. This is beyond stupid. Why is it that you can’t bring yourself to have these forms available when you expect me to have my taxes done and filed in just a few days? Dear Media, You suck. I mean really, really suck. You have been tearing apart Ashley Judd to no end lately. The minute I saw her face I knew she was on Prednisone. How? Because I have been off and on it since I was 26 years old. It will do that to your face and body. She didn’t have work done and the fact that she gained some weight doesn’t make her a cow. And speaking of what the media calls cows…Jennifer Lawrence.
