Love is…

Growing up my parents had these drinking glasses with two naked cartoon characters on it. I would always giggle when I would get that cup. It came from a comic strip called Love is…. Each cup had the naked couple doing something quite innocent and would say something along the lines of Love is…accepting that no one is perfect. They were cute and as I got older I learned to love them…and steal them when I went off to college. :) I learned over the years that the cups were a good reminder that the little things really do add up and while life can be complicated love should not be. Oh sure it can be hard at times as many people aren’t big on compromise but at the end of the day if it’s THAT hard to be together maybe you aren’t supposed to be. I am very fortunate that MDP and I while we have had hard times being together isn’t hard at all. Probably because we really appreciate the small things and try not to expect grandiose things from each other. And with that I am … [Read more...]

Now that’s happy hour…

In my old neighborhood I had some very nice neighbors (I have some nice ones now). One of them is a witty British gal who is all things fabulous. We bonded over handbags immediately and have been poorly influencing each other in the shopping department for the last couple of years. We joke that if she dies (we are morbid) that I’m her back up to marry her husband and become the mom of her two boys. She wants someone who knows Physics (her husband and I have the same nerd apps on our phones) and someone who can bake shark cookies for the boys. Her husband doesn’t seem all that enthused that we are planning out his life for him, silly men. :P Sadly they decided they were packing up and moving back to England. Last night I went over and said my goodbye’s as the neighbors had a little goodbye party for a few of us. As she stood there drinking her wine she said to me “I only drink my calories if there is alcohol in it”. Which I think is a great motto to follow. It reminded me … [Read more...]

What’s in it for you…

“Some of the most rewarding accomplishments are never told or heard of because they are done for personal growth and not personal recognition.” My friend J put that up on Facebook the other day. I’m not sure if that was his own or someone else’s but I liked it. I know a lot of people who are in it for the personal recognition. My mom is a good example of this as she volunteers a lot. Now, I know this because I am her daughter and we talk a lot, but most people probably don’t realize the extent of what she does. Know why? Because she does it to be a good person and not to get personal recognition. She doesn’t need the pat on the back, that’s not why she does it (though I must shout out to my mom for being recognized for her efforts by the local women’s group in her town). But I know many a person who will tell me over and over again how and what they volunteer for because they want to hear the good for you. That’s not why you should be volunteering. In my younger … [Read more...]

No need to study, I’m going to the NHL…

Parent teacher conferences are always a treat. And I mean that in the most sarcastic way possible. It’s not that I don’t enjoy meeting the parents, I do, and it is quite the window into the student’s life. But, most of the parents who show up are the parent of your kids who are performing well and you really don’t need much to say to them other than I really like your kid, they are doing well. And every now and then if they are too quiet you say you wish they would participate more in class. But my favorite of all the parents who do show up are those of students who are smart enough, but are performing badly because they are going to become a professional athlete. If you are a teacher of any grade above 5th grade you are probably smiling along with this. These are the parents that tell you that their kid couldn’t do the work (not because it was too hard) but because he had practice or was doing extra workouts so that he could become the next big thing in whatever sport. So … [Read more...]
