Anything you can do….

BlackRasberryChocolateChunkIceCream1

I have a habit, not a good one, not a bad one…just a habit of seeing something or tasting something and knowing that I can make it better…or at least for cheaper. Case in point: the other day I walked by ice cream isle in search of these non-dairy bon bon type things that I like and I saw a tiny, tiny jar of Black Raspberry and Chocolate ice cream and saw the price tag of almost $7 and nearly fell over. The flavor sounded awesome the price tag on the other hand was ridiculous. I’m sure it’s yummy ice cream but wow. I knew I could make about 5 times that amount for the same price and so I set out to do it. I had to use a combo of black raspberries and tayberries as I ate too many of the black raspberries without thinking. :) They work just as good. Needless to say I made the batch which makes 1 quart for around $2.20. So clearly I made more for less. And let me tell you that if this taste ANYTHING like the original. OMG. My jeans are thanking me so much for being allergic to … [Read more...]

So long, farewell, auf Wiedersehen, good night…

This is where I say a goodbye to many of you. Oh it’s not a permanent goodbye for most of you, as you tend to all come back around Valentine’s Day, but many of you flee this time of year. Many people write or comment that you won’t be coming to my site for a while, that it’s too much temptation while you make your “lifestyle change”. Let me be the first to assure you that if you can’t look at photos of food without setting off some sort of trigger, than you are not on a lifestyle change, you are on a diet. If you can’t figure out how to fit in a brownie once in a while then you aren’t going to last. If you have always had a sweet tooth, which if you come to this site you probably do; it is quite unrealistic I hate to tell you to give up sugar for the rest of your life. I should know, on a dare I once did Sugar Busters for a year. Did I lose weight? No, in fact I gained 12 pounds. Why, because I never lost my sugar craving. I lost my craving for bread, but never … [Read more...]

That just happened…

So I made salted caramel ice cream. I put it on top of a vanilla bean cake which is a recipe I will share this weekend. Then I got distracted (shiny squirrel) only to come back later and notice that I left my ice cream out and it melted. I don’t like the texture of melted ice cream refrozen so I knew I wouldn’t be freezing it again. Well crap I thought. And then I thought again. I thought what if I just let it come to room temperature and then make it into frosting? So that’s what I did. If you are going to give this a go you can use any ice cream I suspect, but I would steer clear of any overly sweet ice creams to start with as you will be adding more sugar to make frosting. While I have been loving my new ice cream book, I thought I would go back to my first ice cream book that I had much success with, The Perfect Scoop. I chose to make a salted caramel ice cream because while I have enjoyed it elsewhere I never have made it at home. This works great because it is not too … [Read more...]

Five servings of fruits and veggies…

I have what I feel is an unnatural addiction to corn (not to be confused with porn…spelling is very important here kids). For years growing up it was one of the few *vegetables* I would eat (along with the other fake vegetables of peas and potatoes)…oh and green beans, I loved those as well. I really should have been born somewhere in the Midwest as I would gladly eat corn with every meal. I put it in my scrambled eggs with a little basil…mmmm. I eat giant bowls of it with just butter and sea salt as a meal. Of course on the cob. Creamed. You named it. So naturally, years ago when passing a corn stand and seeing “try our corn ice cream” I decided why the heck not. And holy goodness. So when I got ahold of Jenni’s Splendid Ice Cream book and the first things I saw in the summer section was a recipe for Sweet Corn Ice Cream with Black Raspberry sauce I KNEW that was the first thing I was making no questions asked!!! It did not let me down. If you even remotely like corn … [Read more...]
