Way Back Wednesday…back to school…

So I usually tell a different story when I do Way Back Wednesdays but this is one that always makes me happy and many of my teacher friends in Arizona are headed back into the trenches this week and so I thought I might remind them of some of the great things about teaching. This is originally from August 30th, 2008. This is a great recipe and perfect for an after school snack to go with your homework. Obviously there has to be a good side to teaching, for if there wasn't, no one would do it. There are many great moments in teaching. Many of those moments you will never know about, and that's the hard part. So often it is years later after you were that child's teacher that you realize the impact that you made on that child. And it usually never the kid you would have thought. Case in point. I had a student when I taught 6th grade. Her older brother was in 8th grade and struggling something horrible in science. At the time the science teacher was what one might call technical(you … [Read more...]

Summer is a season…

Dear Seattle, I still love you. I realize that I am one of the few that does but want you to know that. Please ignore all the people whining that they are not getting a summer. They are confused. Summer is not a weather pattern, but a season this year starting June 21st and lasting until September 23rd. So we are getting a summer, some of us understand this. Those of us who understand this also don’t complain about it, because as far as I know, no one can change the weather. You have whatever weather you are feeling Seattle. Maybe you recently broke up with someone and a little gray and rain are what is getting you through the day. Dear fellow Seattleites, Please stop actually praying for sunshine. Of all the things that are going on in the world, the weather seems like the most frivolous of things to worry about. If you are saying that you only get two months of good weather and you feel you are being robbed, other parts of the country are quite warm. Take a vacation. Or move. … [Read more...]

Way Back Wednesday: Chocolate Peppermint Stick Marshmallow Fantasy Cake…

This week’s installment of Way Back Wednesday is a bittersweet one. It comes from what I made for my housewarming party back in 2007 when I was so excited to be moving into my new home. It ties in sort of with a readers question so I thought it seemed like a good choice: Is being single after marriage scary? What advice would you give to someone who is going through a divorce for how to get through it? Getting through it? Well, I am still getting through it so to speak. When I was first was going through it I pretty much thought I was crazy. I would be happy and content thinking yes clearly this was the way to go, and literally an hour later bawling my eyes out freaking out. But with time that passes. I still randomly cry if I run across something but it helps that my ex and I still talk and see each other from time to time. There was no, I will never see this person again in my life. I think people feel like when they get divorced or they break up (especially if they are … [Read more...]

Forget the pool, dive into this…

I spent my morning having brunch with a friend who moved to Portland. After brunch we swung by and said hi to our mutual friend who just had a baby less than two months ago (too adorable…nothing like a sweet sleeping baby in your arms). We were chatting along and just talking about things. We were talking about where I live now and I confessed that was not my original choice. I had actually planned on moving back to my old apartments before we moved to the house. Those apartments had gas appliances and were walking distance to a Town Center that had a great market and fun things to do. But for reasons we don’t need to go into I moved to the city I live in now as a favor and must say that I love living in it. It’s by the water (though my apartment is not) and though it doesn’t have a cute town center things are close enough by that everything is there. But while we were talking about my old apartments both my friends chimed in that I could move back and hang out with the … [Read more...]
