The Savory, mostly Sweet Life…

If you don’t know Alice’s blog Savory Sweet Life then you are very much missing out on things. Two years ago when I attended a food bloggers conference here in Seattle I finally met Alice in person. Alice is someone who to me is the real deal. Her genuine warmth shines through when you talk to her. Alice is a busy lady with three children (two of whom I have met and are beyond adorable), runs a blog (a very popular one at that), writes for PBS Parents Kitchen Explorers, and of course wrote herself a cookbook Savory Sweet Life: 100 Simply Delicious Recipes for Every Family Occasion . And yet with all her hectic-ness Alice finds time to make time for others, myself included. When I found out about her cookbok I hinted about as subtle as I could that when it did come out please send a copy my way. I'm hoping that when the time comes my not so subtle hints to her to come out of retirement from wedding cake making will be well received as well (don't worry Alice you have a long time … [Read more...]

Long week…

Clearly you deserve a better post…but that won’t be today. :P It’s been a long week around here. People who are close to me know that when someone passes in my life I usually bake bread. Not sure why I just always have. Sadly one of our local hockey family, a guy I have played both with and against, passed away on Wednesday morning. He played a game of hockey and said he wasn’t feeling well but still went to his second game of hockey where he played a few shifts. Told everyone he didn’t feel great and was going home. And at 7am the next morning he had a heart attack and died. Life is short people, spend it with the ones you want to, don’t waste your time on anything that isn’t bringing you joy. I did manage to make something…these are kind of healthy muffins…well healthy for me. I was going to make a pretzel topping but never got around to it. Like I said, weird week. Peanut Butter White Chocolate Chip Muffins ½ cup vegetable oil 1 cup peanut butter (your … [Read more...]

Ladies and Gentleman, Sexual Chocolate…

So I have a lot of teenage readers and I got a question through email that I originally was just going to write back to them directly and be done with it but I thought I would address it on the blog. It’s a super long email so I will just paraphrase the jest of it. Basically this girl’s parents don’t like talking about sex at all with her other than to just say don’t do it. She says that she really likes a boy and was trying to talk to her mom about it and got shot down. I just want to say to parents that if you teen is trusting you enough to come talk to you about sex be thankful. Regardless of your feelings on it, at least hear them out as open lines of communication are especially important during the teen years. When I taught 8th grade I can’t tell you how many kids would come to me with their real life problems because they didn’t feel they could talk to their parents about it. And parents please do not use the excuse of your kid is a good kid and therefore would … [Read more...]

I got mad skills…

There is nothing to make you feel more uncoordinated than playing video games with kids. I had an 8 year old desperately wanting to play Halo with me. I informed him that I was no good at playing Halo. That was putting it mildly. Being 8 an optimistic he didn’t seem to take me all that serious and assured me that he could do what others had not been able to before, he would teach me Halo. I was already down and out staring at my little pink Xbox controller (yes, mine is pink) while he quickly went over what each button did and then listed the exceptions, which there seemed to be many of. I think at this point I was mostly blinking when I was informed just follow my guy and I’ll tell you what to do. You think that would have been easy? Just follow his guy. Sure. Yeah, not so much. I couldn’t get my up and down right. I would move when I was supposed to be looking. And then the next thing you know I was somehow on fire. To which he was in awe that I was on fire since we … [Read more...]
