Every speck of my heart….

valentinevanillapoundcake1

I’ll admit I was never one for Valentine’s Day as a general rule. I don’t think it’s fair to men (it’s not) and it is a made up holiday. Guys usually are very happy to hear that you are not that into Valentine’s Day because it saves them money. I figured I would always be that way. Turns out I was wrong. It’s not the MDP is into Valentine’s Day by any means. But he is quite a sap and is very much a romantic at heart just not the typical shower you with flowers kind of way. For starters he hugs like no other man I have ever known. It does not matter if I haven’t seen him for 8 hours or 8 minutes when he hugs me he hugs me as if I he hasn’t seen me for years. Like he was lost on a deserted island. The kind of hug that makes you feel loved, missed, safe, and desired. Same thing with how he tells me he loves me. Sure a random ‘love you too” comes out but 95% of the time when he tells me he loves me he says it with such meaning behind it. And so I have become … [Read more...]

Back in the saddle…

gingeralepoundcake2

So when I was watching Top Chef Seattle on Wednesday they started the Quick Fire Challenge by being inspired by Canada Dry Ginger Ale. They had to highlight ginger in whatever they were making. Of course all but one went savory as they all fear the world of pastry usually on those shows. So I thought I would represent ginger ale in the dessert world. But not in a quick fire kind of way…pound cake takes a little more than 15 minutes. :) For years I had heard about making pound cake with 7-Up. It’s quite popular in the south or so I am told. Having not baked since Christmas due to the hand I decided to get back in the saddle so to speak and make a 7-Up pound cake…only this time using ginger ale. So glad I finally tried it. Now I can’t compare it to the traditional version as I have never had it. I love that it makes the nice brown crust all the way around not just on the top. Ironically it reminded me of Sara Lee Pound Cake. Which isn’t meant to be an insult I actually like … [Read more...]

About as random as you can get….

I was having writers block (still am) and insomnia from the Sudafed and so I thought I would just write random crap since I have had this recipe ready for days but nothing to go along with it. I think I am going to put my dog on DogShaming.com. She has a serious used Kleenex problem. She used to try and hide it like all good closet snot eating dogs should but NO she has gotten so brazen that she really doesn’t care if we are standing right there. I had a college moment today where the machine was down and I needed gas or else I wasn’t going anywhere. So I had to scavenger my car for money. Just a little over $6 in change. I felt like a moron paying the guy mostly in nickels but hey, it is what it is buddy. I had the slight need to punch him when he suggested that I only get $5 something in gas and buy a lotto ticket with a spare dollar. After months of searching I finally found Key Lime Pie Vodka…pretty much about as yummy as expected. Now I am wishing I never found it. … [Read more...]

Cider House Rules..

We sure did do a quick turnaround in temperature around these parts (in the upper 50’s for a high)…my hands are freezing as I type this. But I’ll take it! It was so chilly today that I busted out the hot apple cider…which meant once opened I needed to do something with the cider. Enter this pound cake. Our weather has been exceptional lately…which isn’t a common phrase used in the Seattle area much. :) The kind where the sun is out but it’s still cool enough to do whatever activity you see fit. And of course that great autumn chill in the morning that just awakens my soul. Since I live in Washington State there is no shortage of apple products, I am lucky that a local orchard makes its own Honey Crisp Cider that I have down right become addicted to. Which is hard because it sells out quickly and unlike candy you can hide a gallon of cider in a drawer. Well I guess you could try but that just screams trouble. It resulted in a quite yummy pound cake with a sticky but … [Read more...]
