The strangest yet best advice from my doctor….

Quite a few months ago my doctor asked me why I exercised and I told him so I could eat what I wanted and/or lose weight. He told me he wanted me to stop exercising for weight loss. To stop going hard core 5 times a week like I did. For I was having a tendency to over train and injure myself. He said to slow it down to 30-60 minutes EVERY day of moderate exercise (hockey not included). I gave him (hopefully most of you are old enough to get this reference the “what you talking about Willis” look). And he handed me a pile of literature. He showed me quite a few studies (I’m one of THOSE people). He had me read an article from Time magazine: “In general, for weight loss, exercise is pretty useless,” says Eric Ravussin, chair in diabetes and metabolism at Louisiana State University and a prominent exercise researcher. Many recent studies have found that exercise isn’t as important in helping people lose weight as you hear so regularly in gym advertisements or on shows … [Read more...]

Running on empty…

It’s a known fact I don’t run and am not a fan of it as a general rule. I own a bumper sticker that reads “0.0 I don’t run”. I’ve done the 5k and 10k thing and even a triathlon back when I was 31 because a friend thought it would be a fun thing to do (she was wrong). My point is I can run…I choose not to. I bring this up because you may recall my special friend who went to lunch with me last year and started with “remember when you used to be in shape”. For the record she has gained some of that weight back. Just saying. :P Anyway weight comes and goes and I don’t care about people’s shapes or sizes. Aside from her being the food police when you go out to eat with her (she sells diet supplements and always wants you to buy them from her) she LOVES to tell me how in shape she is because she runs. She does a 5k at least once a month if not more. She wasn’t really believing me when I said I can run I choose not to. She took it upon herself to “challenge” … [Read more...]

Breaking bread…adopt a single…

The holidays are in full swing and while many people are throwing parties and having little get togethers that you invite your single friends to; I encourage you to adopt a single person this year for Christmas Day. Sounds silly I know but if you have a single friend who either can’t afford to go back home for the holidays, or can’t take off work, or has no family to go back to, this time of year can be especially hard for them. Christmas Day can be mighty lonely if you have no one to share it with. I am lucky in the fact that I have my hockey family. It’s a rather large one at that. I also have non-hockey friends who were amazing after my divorce to make sure I had somewhere to go for the holidays. I did, but I greatly appreciated them offering as I have spent the Thanksgiving with just me, the dog, and a box of take-out Chinese food. And while I love both the dog and Sesame Beef, it kind of sucked and magnified the fact that I was alone. My mother is a collector of … [Read more...]

Did someone call the drama llama?…

“Peabody you are a naive idiot. I’m a stay at home mom and not only do I not have enough money to have a gym membership, I don’t have enough money for daycare. So yes there are some woman that choose to leave their children while they go work out but not all mothers have that luxury. Watch what you say or STFU.” That’s the joy of running your own blog, I don’t have to shut the f*ck up nor watch what I say. For the record, I have more stay at home mom friends than I do working mom friends. My mother was a stay at home mom. Once I was school age she went to work part time but didn’t go to work until after I left for school and was back by the time I was home from school. Though my mother will tell you that she thinks people (mostly women, there are stay at home dad’s) make it much harder on themselves than it needs to be. She still says to this day that raising three children and being a stay at home mom was not quite the ordeal that people make it out to be. Nowadays … [Read more...]
