Number 3: Been in a Hockey Fight…

So right after everyone seemed to be doing the Omnivore 100 meme, another one came out. This time about things that you had done in your life. Number 3….”Been apart of a hockey fight”. Several people when filling that out commented that they were interested in knowing how I would answer that question. So here ya go.
First off that question is vague. Hockey fight at a game where I was a fan or one in a game I played? For today’s story we shall focus on the latter. Yes, I have been in a hockey fight, two for that matter, and both with boys. I of course can not say a man, because no man would hit a woman, but onward with the story.
Fight number one I lost. I am playing. I score a goal. The next thing you know I was tackled by a very large man. He started pounding my head into the ice. I kept waiting for the referees to step in but they didn’t seem to (wimps). So, I threw off my one glove (since my other arm was pinned down beneath me) and I started punching. He wasn’t wearing a cage or shield so everything on his face was fair game. Meanwhile he kept beating me down. The refs finally came over and broke it up. I broke his nose, but he gave me a mild concussion and had me pinned the whole time so I consider him the victor of the fight.
Fight number two I won. All night this guy was insulting me and so in return I paid the favor. After two periods of being jerks to each other. He was pushing on me and said, “ya wanna go”? I asked him “do you really want to get your ass kicked in front of God and every one by a girl?” That threw him off a bit. He shouted let’s go and threw down his gloves. I took off my helmet and gloves as well. I threw up my left arm as if to punch him. I noticed he was staring at that and so I gave him an upper cut to the jaw with my right hand. And down he went. In front of God and every one, he got his ass kicked by a girl. He laid there for quite sometime. Eventually getting up. He said nothing to me. Never said one thing to me the next time we played them as well. In fact, never again.
It’s a good time to bring this up since preseason hockey is just around the corner, in about two weeks to be exact. Then before you know it, October 4th will be here and regular season play will be on it’s way. Yes, everyone, the greatest time of year is approaching….Fall. Fall when I get to bake whenever I want without sweating. When my days can be occupied with watching hockey (and swearing at the TV screen). Watching the trees undergo a metamorphosis from lush greens to a rustic reds and glowing golds. And I get to eat all the foods I love…pumpkin being at the top of the list. Now, you can get canned pumpkin year round. But there is something about Fall that makes pumpkin just taste better.
I had been working on this idea for this bread in my head for awhile. And after a week of experimenting I finally got it where I wanted it. So you reap the benefits of my labor.
If you are allergic to nuts you can very easily leave them out. Also, if you are not a fan of maple (shudder) you can leave out the maple syrup and extract and just add vanilla.
So what have we learned here today boys and girls? Best not to mess with Peabody, as she may hit you.

Pumpkin Spice Bread with Maple Cheesecake Layer
Maple Cheesecake Layer:
9 ounces cream cheese, at room temperature
¼ cup granulated sugar
¼ cup brown sugar
6 tsp real maple syrup (I use grade B)
1 tsp maple extract
1 TBSP all-purpose flour
1 large egg
Pumpkin Spice Bread:
2 cups all-purpose flour
1 tsp baking soda
½ tsp salt
½ tsp ground cinnamon
¼ tsp ground ginger
¼ tsp fresh ground nutmeg
1 cup pumpkin puree(plain, not the already made pumpkin pie kind)
½ cup canola oil
2 large eggs
1 ½ cups granulated sugar
1 cup chopped pecans
Preheat oven to 325F.
Lightly grease and flour three mini loaf pans. In a medium mixing bowl, combine all the maple cheesecake ingredients; beat until smooth and creamy, about 2 minutes. Set aside.
In another bowl, sift together flour, baking soda, salt, and spices; set aside.
Place pumpkin puree, vegetable oil, eggs and sugar in a mixing bowl of an electric stand mixer. Using the paddle attachment, beat for about 1 minute, until fully combined
Add flour mixture into the pumpkin mixture and mix just until combined.
Fold in the pecans.
Pour half of the pumpkin bread batter evenly into the three prepared loaf pans. Spoon cream cheese mixture on top of pumpkin batter layer and then pour on the remaining pumpkin batter.
Bake in preheated 325° oven for 50 to 60 minutes, or until a wooden skewer inserted into center of the loaf comes out clean.
Cool bread in pans for 10 minutes.
Remove bread from pans and place on a wire rack to cool completely.
Serve at room temperature or cool.

I am blown away by this bread. Hockey is not my thing but I’d come and watch if you were serving this!
September 11th, 2008 at 12:55 am
OMG, this bread contains all the things I love! Beautiful! I’m keeping that recipe, thanks!
Cheers,
Rosa

What a lovely story of how you met your husband! lol!
I am scared but in awe.
I love the colder weather too and pumpkin. Yum.

Uhm, hey Peabody..free to date? My boys might need some protection (they’re 15, 12 and 12, makes 39?).
Lovely colour on your cake, adore maple!
September 11th, 2008 at 2:31 am
Great Bread and an even greater story! I used to play hockey (the field kind and not ice) and got sent to the sin bin once for swearing.. got into a lot of skirmishes but field hockey is like you get sent to the sin bin for just threatening someone! But yeah, after the game there were some fights! LOL
September 11th, 2008 at 3:24 am
YOU BET…don’t mess with Peabody. That’s a helluva good looking loaf; love the cheesecake interior. And yes, pumpkin tastes better in fall, as do apples & cinnamon! Great tale…
September 11th, 2008 at 3:46 am
Ho . . . how does a gorgeous cake with the finesse of a cheesecake layer go with a girl who can take out a boy in a hockey game like that go together . . . Oh, no problem, it’s Peabody!!
Don’t mess with Peabody!
September 11th, 2008 at 3:47 am
I love the big chunks of pecans in that slice! that would be so good for a morning breakfast with some fresh fruit and maple glazed bacon!
September 11th, 2008 at 4:05 am
HAHA!!! Such a cute story, Peabody – I always love reading them
I too believe that autumn is the best time of year – it’s my favorite season, for sure!
The maple cheesecake layer is SUCH an enticing addition to the already-scrumptious-looking pumpkin bread – fabulous!!!
September 11th, 2008 at 4:28 am
Seriously, can I just say you are my hero? B/c you definitely are. This brea looks MORE than fantastic!
September 11th, 2008 at 4:33 am
Oh my God! Were those guys high? On roid rage or something? Am I being sexist if I find it so unbelievable that guys would pick a fight with a woman? (Well, I am a pacifist as it is… This is just outrageous)
I think the maple (yum!) cheesecake layer is just the thing to push this over the top, I love it!
September 11th, 2008 at 4:58 am
I love that story! You’re one tough cookie! I also love that recipe. It looks amazing! I definitely want to give it a try and I completely agree that pumpkin tastes so much better in the Fall!
September 11th, 2008 at 5:10 am
Well, I definitely love maple, this bread sounds delicious! And I’m sure that guy you knocked out will think twice about picking a fight with a girl! Go Peabody!
September 11th, 2008 at 5:31 am
I have been longing for fall, I can feel it coming closer, and then you come up with this? Pumpkin and maple cheesecake bread? You are truly a goddess.
September 11th, 2008 at 5:50 am
I wish I were as brave as you! Punching a guy in the face… I know a couple of morons that deserve that. I think I’ll call for your help next time, Pea.
When I saw the photo I was stunned and could not guess what the filling was. So beautiful.
September 11th, 2008 at 6:22 am
What a wonderful way to welcome the fall. The aroma of this beautiful bread will fill my kitchen this week.
September 11th, 2008 at 6:24 am
OK….the word’s out all you macho hockey guys…DON’T MESS WITH PEABODY! I love it!!! You go girl!
And this bread….I’m swooning over the pictures-along with drooling I might add! This is definitely on my fall baking list.
September 11th, 2008 at 6:25 am
Wow. Can I hire you as my bodyguard? Haha. I like to think I’m tough, you know, *emotionally*, but if someone punched me in the face I’d curl into a ball and start crying and beg them not to kill me. Lol.
September 11th, 2008 at 6:26 am
I love this post. In fact, it just might be my favorite one out of your blog thus far. I know better to mess with Peabody… both in a hockey ring or anywhere near an oven. As for that ridiculously stunning pumpkin & cheesecake concoction, I’m speechless. Just damn hungry and in utter awe of your awesomeness.
September 11th, 2008 at 6:45 am
Great story and great looking recipe! I love fall also. It is winter I dread!
September 11th, 2008 at 6:58 am
Delurking, because that was the funniest post ever. I laughed and laughed and read it out loud to my husband (he’s a hockey player, I’m not). I plan to keep this to read to my girls (now 2 and 4) when they start playing hockey! Oh, and I love all things pumpkin, too. Bonus!
September 11th, 2008 at 7:07 am
The pumpkin bread looks fantastic, I’d love to surprise my husband with it at some point.
I’d still say you won the first fight. After all, he’ll bear the testimony of your valor (the broken nose) on his face for the rest of his life!:)
September 11th, 2008 at 7:15 am
Who? Who doesn’t like maple? You can’t leave that out!
September 11th, 2008 at 7:37 am
LOL!! GREAT story!! And oh my goodness, this bread….last Fall I made a Pumpkin layer cake with maple icing and it was the most wonderful combo. This looks even better! I can’t wait to try this!!!

OMG!! I’m laughing my ass off in the office over this. I knew you would have kicked some butt…
I love this bread and can’t wait until I can make some.
AND hockey is coming up and you know what that means
September 11th, 2008 at 8:02 am
ROFL “In front of God and everyone.” Way to go Pea! As for the jerk who gave you a concussion – I think he should get some of this bread with a “special” little addition. I had a friend once who wanted to add ex-lax to the shake mix at McD’s when he quit (he didn’t by the way). Anyway, I’m sure that guy deserves something special! As for me, this bread looks wonderful and I can’t imagine why anyone would want to leave the maple out!? No way!
September 11th, 2008 at 8:36 am
Your stories always make me laugh! This bread looks amazing. I have been wanting to bake with pumpkin for the past few days but haven’t decided on what to make. This may be the answer!
September 11th, 2008 at 8:42 am
I hope I never get into a fight with you! Only maybe for the last slice of that bread! It looks seriosly good!
September 11th, 2008 at 8:57 am
Damn girl – remind me not to try and take your cake from you in a dark alley.
This looks awesome…
September 11th, 2008 at 9:17 am
I’ve been making my Mom’s pumpkin pie recipe for years, but I think it could definately use a layer of cream cheese!
September 11th, 2008 at 9:42 am
I can’t say I’m a big pumpkin fan but this looks like it could change my mind. And yes, only a few weeks until HOCKEY!!!! If the Sharks season tanks can I have you come play and kick some butt???
I did think of you yesterday when the weather was cold and how you would be happy with that
September 11th, 2008 at 9:43 am
I agree–pumpkin does taste better in the fall!
And I know better than to mess with you, lady…
September 11th, 2008 at 10:00 am
You must be one tough cookie! I can’t believe that any guy would have audacity to hit a woman, regardless of competition, situation, whatever. This looks amazing, and so creative!
September 11th, 2008 at 10:04 am
When I looked at the picture, I thought, “that better be a cream cheese layer, not some whimpy white cocolate layer!” I love roasted pumpkin with a bit of butter and salt. Kudos for kicking that guy’s ass, and I too am excited for the hockey (and soccer) seasons to get underway. Husband says (jokingly, I think…), “you must have been raised by wolves.”
September 11th, 2008 at 10:07 am
Wow – I can’t believe there are guys that creepy out there. Geez! Anyhoo, the bread – this may have to be my first fall pumpkin baking project. I’m especially excited about the maple…yum!
September 11th, 2008 at 10:07 am
What a special treat in the middle. The cheesecake layer looks divine!! I can’t wait to try this…I guess fall is here so why not now??
September 11th, 2008 at 10:35 am
This bread looks so yummy! I can’t wait to make it. Thanks for perfecting it for us!
I love hockey but I’m definitely a spectator and not a player. I cannot believe those guys you got into fights with. Good job on breaking the first guy’s nose!!
September 11th, 2008 at 11:24 am
That’s too funny! And even though you consider the first fight a loss, I would be pretty embarrassed if I were him, having pinned a girl down and still getting his nose broken!
And I’m soooo excited for pumpkin recipes, so bring ‘em on! This one looks AMAZING!
September 11th, 2008 at 11:25 am
WOW, that looks absolutely outstanding! I love pumpkin bread.. but cheesecake bread.. OMG, i have GOT to try this one!
September 11th, 2008 at 11:49 am
This has got to the most delicious bread I have ever laid my eyes on!!!
September 11th, 2008 at 11:56 am
Oh, Peabody, you make me laugh so hard, my socks are wet (as my dear best friend, a Canadian and new American citizen, likes to say!)
September 11th, 2008 at 12:22 pm
Wow, Peabody! This looks fantastic! I will remember not to mess with you
September 11th, 2008 at 12:55 pm
would it be wrong for me to simply dig out the maple-cream cheese portion? good googa mooga.
September 11th, 2008 at 12:57 pm
Well I certainly hope you kicked his ass! And giving a guy a broken nose while being pinned down and having your head pounded, well that sounds to me like you actually took the victory there. Afterall, if he’d been the victor, you’d never have been able to lay a hand on him.
September 11th, 2008 at 12:58 pm
Oh my god, this looks incredible! All of the best fall flavors, all in one loaf… I’m dying to try veganizing it.
September 11th, 2008 at 1:09 pm
I totally agree that pumpkin tastes better in the fall. This pumpkin bread looks fabulous! Definitely one to bookmark and make soon.
September 11th, 2008 at 1:48 pm
You are a genius. You just took the best part of fall and slapped an indulgent dessert in the middle of it. That looks AMAZING! This makes me love fall.
September 11th, 2008 at 1:53 pm
that looks fabulous!
September 11th, 2008 at 2:06 pm
It’s not quite fall in Alabama, but I have a feeling that this bread will materialize in the next week or so. Amazing. I can’t wait to mess around with it and customize it into lots of different flavors!!
September 11th, 2008 at 2:38 pm
You crack me up!!! Thank you for the gut-busting laugh I just had. Now I’m even more of a fan!
September 11th, 2008 at 2:47 pm

September 11th, 2008 at 6:41 pm
Okay I will just, like, ah, admire your food (from afar). Just kidding. You go girl. Love the uppercut!
We had this little Puerto Rican woman just win a big fight here in Rochester. Love the piss and vinegar she has. Single mom with four kids. GIRL POWER!
September 11th, 2008 at 8:25 pm
This is one of my favorite posts of all times and not just because of the pumpkin!
September 12th, 2008 at 4:04 am
That bread looks fantastic and so different. I want to try that one!!!!
September 12th, 2008 at 5:48 am
Now that came out perfect. I’ve tried this, adding cream cheese to a fruit bread mix (in a bundt pan) and the cream cheese melted into the batter. But I think I should try a bread pan, not a bundt pan next.
Awesome photo girl!
September 12th, 2008 at 6:38 am

September 12th, 2008 at 7:02 am
Oh wow. Yes I HAVE to make that!!
September 12th, 2008 at 8:49 am
lesson learned. I love hockey season. my husband played for the Philadelphia Phantoms for a few years after college, and the fans got more excited about the fights than they did about the goals.
This cake looks incredibly moist and delicious.
September 12th, 2008 at 10:35 am
You are awesome!
September 12th, 2008 at 2:03 pm
Jeez, peabody. How’d your knuckles feel after that uppercut? I’m still wincing. May need some of that droolworthy pumpkin cheesy mapley cakey yumminess you have there. I’m thinking it could mail okay, right?
September 12th, 2008 at 5:56 pm
Amazing how some guys just don’t understand that some women are tough…like you are!
The pumpkin bread is awesome, especially with the maple cheesecake in the middle. Another must try!
September 12th, 2008 at 5:56 pm
I made this today but instead of making 3 mini loves I made 1 9-inch bundt. The kitchen smelled so good while it was baking and cooling. This is a keeper.
I may tr it with mashed sweet potatoes.
September 12th, 2008 at 9:17 pm
that is one ridiculous story and an even crazier dessert – I love them BOTH!
I was never a fan of hockey until I got to Cornell, then everything changed… those games were sweet!!

Love the results! If I ever try this I just know it’s going to be a disaster. Gotta get some confidence
September 14th, 2008 at 11:47 pm
Holy crap! You are tough. I find fights in hockey kind of fascinating. It’s pretty despicable that a guy would give a woman a concussion in the name of a game (I know, I’m minimizing hockey). The uniform, mixed in with competition, seems to blind an opponent to the person who wears it.
You’ve been awarded!
September 17th, 2008 at 12:43 pm
You know I loved this post. And I loved that the dude said (in essence) “Why yes, I do want to get my ass kicked by a girl in front of God and everyone.” ha ha ha! Go girl. You are badass. Last time I got punched in the face by a guy was 8th grade. That doesn’t mean I don’t size up every guy I meet (to determine if I can take him out if necessary). Rock on!
September 17th, 2008 at 5:04 pm
LOve your story about your meeting – very nice! As well this bread rocks – adding to my recipe file now! I love this for fall!
September 21st, 2008 at 6:35 pm
I baked this yesterday. Instead of mini loaf pans, I just used one regular sized bundt pan. My husband, who does NOT like pumpkin, said it was the best cake I ever baked – we’ve only got about 3-4 slices left after a little over 24 hours of making this.
TWO THUMBS UP – thanks for the recipe!

October 13th, 2008 at 6:52 am
I made this bread and it was moist and delicious! I gave a loaf to my roommates another loaf to co-workers and I brought a loaf to my boyfriend’s parent’s house. So yummy and really nice with a cup of coffee. Thank you Peabody for sharing!
October 15th, 2008 at 1:30 pm
I made this loaf a while back leaving out the cream cheese layer…if I had remembered to add the sugar to the recipe I’m sure it would have been lovely. Wow, to be so excited to take a bite of that dried out looking loaf of poop only to find out that the most important ingredient isn’t there! Perhaps next time I will do it properly? LOL.
October 16th, 2008 at 12:49 pm
I made this, and it was yummy, but perhaps you could state the size of the pans you use(d). I used three mini-loaf pans — and got baked-on black goo all over the bottom of my over from the overflow. Also, my cream cheese layer was very thin, not like the one you have pictured

October 23rd, 2008 at 6:57 am
Susan and i must have the same size mini pans because mine over flowed as well. Luckily i put them on a cookie sheet at the last minute. my cream cheese layer was also thin. this may be because i mixed it by hand. I dont have a stand mixer, but next time i make it I will use the hand mixer to get more volume. the end result was very tasty though! I will try this again using 4 mini loaves. thank you for the recipe!
November 1st, 2008 at 7:54 pm
Hi Peabody,
I made this tonight and it was delicious, but I have an odd question. I followed ingredients to a “T,” but my maple cheesecake layer was more brown than white and did the strangest thing – it sunk into the loaf itself so that there pretty much was no cheesecake layer. Any ideas?
November 5th, 2008 at 3:01 pm
I’m so glad other people had the same problems as I did! I thought I was going crazy. I tried this recipe twice, thinking I had just done something terribly wrong the first time. My cream cheese layer was way, way too runny. And brown. And whatever mini-loaf pan you used must have been way larger than mine, because they were overflowing. The second time I tried the recipe I made 4 very large loaves.
My question is: are you sure you don’t mean 3 TEASPOONS of maple syrup? The cream cheese layer was a bit too sweet and runny, so I’m wondering if that’s the problem.
Love the recipe… very tasty… just sad that it did not turn out how yours did.
November 11th, 2008 at 5:30 pm
Do you think it would be okay to make this with 8 oz of cream cheese? I buy them in 8 oz bricks so hopefully your answer is yes… =)
