More than meets the eye…

Okay, so I know what you are thinking. Boring. You see this and you are about to just keep on passing by.
But before you go, let me just say that this was so tasty that I actually threw a bunch of it out….to save myself from eating the whole pan.
So ignore the crappy lighting and the fact that there is nothing really drool-worthy about them (other than the taste) and give them a chance. Unless you don’t like toffee, then these probably aren’t for you.
I made these because I was really looking for an excuse to sit around and eat the extra toffee pieces…if we are being honest.
Lucky for me this cake used up most of the bag (if you are in the states Heath makes milk chocolate covered toffee pieces, which is what I used). So I had portion control. I felt proud of myself. That was until I ate a piece of the cake. Then another. And so on, you see where this is going.
It got to the point where into the composting bin it went. And not just that, it got covered with Tabasco sauce, just in case I felt the need to fish it out of there. Gross, I know, but it’s just touching other food, so technically, it wouldn’t be that bad if I went and fished it out. I know, I know, you think I a little less of me. I’ll survive.
And just one last quick note to the person who emailed me asking if I would give up using Culinary Concoctions as my food blog name so you can use it. Um. No. I’m sure there are other Culinary Concoctions blogs out there. But there is only one Culinary Concoctions by Peabody.
So unless your name is Peabody, you are probably safe.

Brown Sugar Toffee Snack Cake
4 ounces unsalted butter, at room temperature
1 cup dark brown sugar, packed
1 egg
1 tsp vanilla extract
1 ¼ cup self rising flour
¼ cup sour cream
¼ cup buttermilk
1 ½ cups milk chocolate covered toffee pieces, divided
Preheat oven to 350F.
Spray a 8-x-8-inch pan with baking spray, or butter and flour it. Set aside.
Using a stand mixer, cream together the butter and brown sugar on medium speed until light and fluffy, about 3 minutes.
Add the egg and vanilla extract and beat until incorporated.
In a small bowl whisk together the buttermilk and sour cream.
Turn mixer speed to low. Starting with the flour alternate, 1/3 flour, ½ buttermilk mixture, 1/3 flour, remaining ½ buttermilk mixture, remaining 1/3 flour.
Fold in ½ cup milk chocolate covered toffee pieces.
Pour into prepared pan and bake for 25-30 minutes. Insert a knife or wooden skewer to test for doneness.
Remove from oven. Sprinkle the remaining 1 cup chocolate covered toffee pieces on top. The chocolate should melt, that’s okay, you want that.
Best if eaten the day of, as the toffee will get a little sticky. Store in an air tight container for up to 3 days.

September 17th, 2009 at 4:21 am
I am still laughing at the thought of you throwing these yummy squares away and drenching them with hot sauce. You are one very crazy woman, however I do understand….they must be THAT good! I give my treats away, enjoy a little and off they go or else I think I may find myself doing such a thing too if it wasnt for my husbands sweet tooth.
Ive not seen chocolate covered toffee bits!!! I must be shopping in the wrong area of this country. Ill keep my eyes peeled from now on so that I can try these. My Dad adores toffee, Ill send him this recipe.

Boring???? NEVER!!! And hey, it’s a PERFECT excuse to eat more toffee – go for it, always
September 17th, 2009 at 4:53 am
I LOVE this cake.
Oh and for me, culinary concoction is associated with YOU, PEABODY.
September 17th, 2009 at 5:00 am
i love this post!!! I have definitely found myself in front of the pantry pouring the extra heath bits into my mouth
And, I may have been guilty of removing food from the trash in the past (seriously, it was wrapped)! Love it!

It sounds like this cake would be pure heaven to me! I’d have to dump it in the garbage if I couldn’t find someone to give it to… too funny about the tobasco sauce, but whatever works, right? LOL!
September 17th, 2009 at 5:13 am
I LOVE toffee pieces, and constantly search for recipes to use them. This looks like it really showcases she awesomeness of the toffee. Starred in google reader
September 17th, 2009 at 5:27 am
Um, what a cheek that someone would even ask that !!!!!!! They look pretty good to me, but bad on you for inspiring me to break my spring diet, here in Africa!
September 17th, 2009 at 5:53 am
Yum, these look delicious! I’ve been searching for a new dessert idea to bring to a friend’s house this weekend, and I’ve definitely found it! Thanks for sharing this!
September 17th, 2009 at 6:12 am
Love toffee! I always get the Heath Blizzard at Dairy Queen, so these would be right up my alley. Looks good Peabody!
September 17th, 2009 at 6:13 am
Boring? No. This looks fantastic!
September 17th, 2009 at 7:00 am
What alternate universe was that person living in that they thought it’d be appropriate to ask you that!?! Once again proving that there are some strange people out there in internet-land. On the other hand, at least they asked… it’s a start!
I’m not even reading the recipe because I do NOT need something that tempting in my home right now. Maybe I’ll just send it to myself for later. Yeah, that’s it!
September 17th, 2009 at 7:16 am
Ha! I can’t believe someone asked if you would give up your name. If they aren’t creative enough to come up with their own name, then the recipes probably aren’t any good either!
September 17th, 2009 at 7:18 am
This is a very good excuse to use up toffee…
September 17th, 2009 at 7:38 am
First off – these pics look great. Secondly, I’m not srue I would have had the will power to toss all of these. They look too freakin good!!!!
September 17th, 2009 at 7:38 am
Ooh, I grew up right down the road from the original Heath plant (now it’s Hershey’s-owned, I think). One summer I babysat for a guy who did construction during one of their remodels and he would come back with trash bags FULL of Heath Bars. Perk of the job – with the bonus of youthful metabolism.
September 17th, 2009 at 7:46 am
Definitely not boring! Looks so yummy!
September 17th, 2009 at 8:01 am
Your posts always make me laugh, in a good way, mainly because I identify with so many of the things you share. I find myself often throwing things away to keep myself from eating them, I had to throw away a whole batch of scones yesterday, leaving just one for my husband to try so I knew hands off. It was sad. But, I think that recognizing how to enforce self-control is almost the same thing as practicing it, right?
September 17th, 2009 at 8:14 am
Not boring at all. Looks very homey and delicious – casual desserts are sometimes the best.
September 17th, 2009 at 8:15 am
Put me on a desert island, give me only one candy bar I can eat for the rest of time, and I would choose Heath or Skor. I am going to make these and bring all but one piece over the neighbors.
September 17th, 2009 at 8:33 am
Yum! This looks delicious – and it’s easy!
September 17th, 2009 at 8:34 am
I love this post and am sure I will love the cake. Reading it was like seeing my own though process when it comes to toffee bits and amazing cake laid out in your very entertaining way. I may not be able to make this for just that reason, but may not be able to resist.
September 17th, 2009 at 8:42 am
Those bars look amazing! I love that you threw it away and covered it with hot sauce. It reminds me of Sex in the City when Miranda made a cake and threw it away and then found herself picking at it from the trash. She then covered it with soap just to be sure she wouldn’t touch it…haha.
September 17th, 2009 at 9:10 am
Of course there is only one Culinary Concoctions by Peabody, and there ain’t gonna be any more! LOL…OK, this is my kinda cake. Brown sugar is right up my street, and this screams yummy comfort to me!
September 17th, 2009 at 9:22 am
I”m still snickering because I have done the same thing. Threw out something so I wouldn’t eat it. My best idea though is to take it wherever I am going that day- like today I am trying those wonderful dulce de leche cheesecake squares (I’m a little late getting on that bandwagon) and I am going to take photos, taste one and take the rest to my hairdressers. They will be inhaled!

Anything toffee is ALWAYS good. I would of just freezed the extra cake or given it away to someone!
September 17th, 2009 at 10:13 am
How could anybody think this is boring. The photograph is making me crave these.
September 17th, 2009 at 11:04 am
Next time this happens, send the rest to me! (Before you toss it in the compost bin of course).
September 17th, 2009 at 11:14 am
That is sad times that your KA fell apart on you…but that cake looks amazing.
September 17th, 2009 at 12:35 pm
I was horrified when I read that you threw the rest of this cake away, but then I remembered that I threw away some peach cobbler so I wouldn’t eat all of it. I would have gladly taken a piece or 2 off your hands.
September 17th, 2009 at 12:58 pm
Uh, you threw them away! You should hold giveaways for your extra yummy treats!
September 17th, 2009 at 1:35 pm
Poor cake! I think it looks delicious! Pity you through some of it away I would have gobbled it
September 17th, 2009 at 2:22 pm
It always blows my mind at the audacity of people sometimes. Recently was asked by a church member if we could move back a memorial service start time, because she had a choral rehearsal she had to attend to. Seriously! I have not seen the chocolate covered toffee yet. Although, that may be a good thing!!
September 17th, 2009 at 2:54 pm
Are you kidding? To even think that the photo, regardless of lighting, could be BORING?? I caught one glimpse and I’m craving a whole pan! Even before reading! Thank you for providing consistently scrumptious ideas for bakers-in-the-making. I heart your blog.
September 17th, 2009 at 2:56 pm
I love toffee so not only does this look and sound delicious, but now you also got the Transformer’s theme song stuck in my head. ; )
September 17th, 2009 at 3:06 pm
A droolworthy cake! What a wonderful flavor it must have!
Cheers,
Rosa
September 17th, 2009 at 3:35 pm
I have done the throwing away thing so I won’t eat them. I take them out to the dumpster so I won’t even have to look at them.
I’ll make sure to try these when I can pawn them off on other people.
September 17th, 2009 at 3:36 pm
Tell me where your garbage is! Then ignore the rustling outside your window.
September 17th, 2009 at 4:31 pm
Seriously, there is, and will only ever be, one Culinary Concoctions by Peabody, so the person who emailed you can go jump.
This looks every bit as good as all of your other goodies. Your photos entice me every time and you commentary is always witty.
I have to tell you that find myself keeping my fingers crossed every day before I click on your site just hoping that there is a new post. Even if there isn’t something new I just re-read an older entry. You never disappoint.
September 17th, 2009 at 5:14 pm
A perfect combination. I will absolutely make this cake.
September 17th, 2009 at 6:47 pm
My husband who grew up as a shepherd boy gets furious when I throw food away! Back then, they are pretty self-sufficient and food is only adequate. So he treasures every single bit of food that we have now
These toffee cake looks great, send some my way next time!
September 17th, 2009 at 8:06 pm
I’m with you on fishing stuff out of the composting bin, as gross as that sounds. I wrapped chocolate cake in a paper towel once and threw it in, only to fish it out later. Justification? It was wrapped in paper towel so totally free game. It was my one and only Miranda (Sex and the City) moment!
September 17th, 2009 at 10:18 pm
This looks so good and simple. I don’t think it needs anything dripping off the side of it or piled on top. It’s perfect.
And seriousluy about the blog name? Where do you find these quacks?
September 18th, 2009 at 7:34 am
Boring? I think not! Heath toffee pieces and brown sugar cake are far from boring. I love the base cake for this and I imagine you could top this with pretty much anything if you didn’t like toffee – mmmm… ideas are swimming in my head and making me hungry now!
September 18th, 2009 at 8:04 am
Boring? Are you kidding me? These look fantastic! I’ll just have to make sure I bake them while my boys are at school so they don’t fight me for the leftover toffee!
September 18th, 2009 at 11:22 am
Anything with sour cream and buttermilk in it has GOT to be delicious! I would probably eat this whole thing too!
September 18th, 2009 at 11:57 am
I seriously doubt there would be any portion control if I came anywhere near these. Sigh. Drool. Love chocolate covered Heath bars!
September 18th, 2009 at 2:01 pm
I don’t think these boring, I think they look addicting! I could eat those little toffee bites all day!
September 18th, 2009 at 5:41 pm
Brown Sugar Toffee Snack Cake doesn’t sound a bit boring to me. It sounds fabulous!
September 18th, 2009 at 7:26 pm
You remind me a little bit of Larry David in the way you come out and say what we are all thinking/doing in the bubbles above our head.
I understand. I’ve run half a pan of brownies under the water of my faucet in order to stop my evil eating hand that was under the spell of my equally evil stomach.
September 18th, 2009 at 7:54 pm
Mmmmm…I love toffee! I made some cookies the other day just because they had toffee in them. This looks wonderful!
September 19th, 2009 at 2:59 am
I’ve sprinkled pepper over ice cream to keep from eating the entire pint (or half gallon) so I understand
Recipe does look yummy too.
September 19th, 2009 at 6:37 pm
Oh man… my BF loves toffee, he’d probably love this!
September 20th, 2009 at 6:47 am
I think they look really good! You can’t go wrong with cake, with chocolate and toffee!
September 20th, 2009 at 6:18 pm
yum – maybe this is what i will make w/my leftover sour cream
i love toffee!
September 20th, 2009 at 10:12 pm
This would make a great housewarming present!
September 20th, 2009 at 10:28 pm
I can see that these would need that Tabasco to keep them from calling to you from the compost bin. What’s not to like about brown sugar and toffee?
September 25th, 2009 at 12:10 pm
These look amazing!!! I LOVE toffee… got to try.
November 4th, 2009 at 10:28 am

I tried these and they are outstanding…the cake was so moist and tender…I will make this often….thanks for posting the recipe…
