Chocolate or Bacon that is the question….

First off I want to give a big thank you to those who donated so far to this week’s unexciting but needed telethon (don’t worry I am stopping any and all bugging on Saturday and won’t ask for a year). :) I know a lot of you don’t believe me but I truly mean it when I say that I appreciate any amount you give. The dollar donations are just as meaningful as any larger amount. There are more than enough times in my life where a dollar was a precious thing and I get it…especially the single moms/dads and starving students out there. As well as anyone who has been hit hard with the economy.

We were having a discussion on my FB page the other day about if you had to be allergic to either chocolate or bacon which and therefore could never have it again, which would you chose? BTW- if you are not a fan of the FB page you are missing out on life shattering discussions such as these. :P Most people said they couldn’t give up chocolate. I couldn’t give up bacon. Milk chocolate is sooo yummy but is filled with dairy and I become more and more sensitive to dairy as I get older. So my vote was for bacon. :) I liked the person who asked if suicide was an option since they couldn’t chose. :P

I thought about making a chocolate bacon cupcake with a toffee frosting. So I did. The favor was good but the texture was odd. So I tried again. This time though I saved the bacon for a topping and put the toffee in the cupcake. That worked better this time. I think the bacon grease may have affected the outcome last time the first round of cupcakes. Plus this way if you have people who are anti-bacon on their baked goods you can leave it off…more for me.

All this week I will torture you with the sad Crazy Cocker Spaniel eyes asking you for your dollar donation….so here she is.

Chocolate Toffee Cupcakes with Salted Caramel Frosting and Bacon

Chocolate Cupcake Recipe of your Choice (I used this one)
1 cup toffee pieces
1 cup unsalted butter, at room temperature
¾ cup salted caramel sauce (I used Trader Joes)
4 cups powdered sugar
Milk to thin

Bacon pieces
Toffee pieces

Preheat to the temperature your recipe calls for. Line cupcake tin with liners.

Prepare your favorite chocolate cupcake recipe but add toffee piece to it. Bake according to the recipes instructions.

Remove from pans and let cool on wire rack.

Using a stand mixer with paddle attachment add the butter and salted caramel and beat until fully incorporated. Add powdered sugar a cup at a time and beat until you reach desired consistency. If still too thick add milk to thin out.

Top with toffee pieces and bacon.

  1. Yum! I baked bacon toffee brownies a couple of weeks ago and they were fantastic. I will have to try these!

  2. Though I could easily give up bacon, there is little to no chance I could give up chocolate. I mean if I really really tried, maybe I could give up things covered in chocolate :). But not things covered in chocolate and then covered in candy :).
I’m not typically a frosting person, but love the chocolate bacon combo. I’m wondering if just sprinkling the bacon on top of the cupcakes before baking would work; or do you think it might burn?
And it’s hard to resist the looks most dogs give, but your dog’s looks should be labeled “weapon’s grade.” My dog gave looks that were quite similar, which is one reason why she was so “festively plump” :).

  3. I eat chocolate daily. Could never give it up.

  4. could never give up chocolate! bacon is rare treat, so I don’t think I’d miss it.

  5. Im with ya. Couldnt give up bacon. I love it too much. And there are many sweet subs for chocolate.

However, you know my feeling on bacon in sweets. Just cant do it.

  6. I’ll keep the bacon!
    Love that puppy!

  7. I saw Bacon Bits (you know those little bacony things in glass jars used for sprinkling on stuff?) and I thought of you. I think bacon might be the only meat (that I have tried) that I do not like. Maybe it’s the fattyness or the greasyness or I dunno. All I know is that I could never live without my darling and precious chocolate!

  8. P.S. I totally didn’t finish that thought about the bacon bits. **add after the closed parenthesis: for the first time at the grocery store-

  9. Oh my – I was trying to think of a different take on chocolate cupcakes for an event this weekend, and this may be it! Well worth a donation…:-)

  10. Your Crazy Cocker Spaniel is soooo cute!

Those cupcakes are terrific! Bacon and cupcakes, I say hell yes!!!

  11. She is the most gorgoeus little puppy dog :)

I’m not ready for bacon in my sweet stuff, well yet anyhow… although these look fab.

Chocoalte or bacon, hm mainly chocolate, but occassionally bacon :)lol.

  12. I definitely like the idea of having the toffee inside with the bacon on top instead of the other way around, glad it worked out!

  13. Have you thought about making candied bacon instead? The fat mostly disappears, but the end product is marvelous. I regularly add batch to chocolate chip cookies, and it works very well indeed.

  14. Can I vote to give up toffee? I never did like that stuff.

  15. This sounds very yummy and if I had to choose it would probably be bacon because chocolate has so many valuable iterations…

Anyhow, I thought of your inspired idea to make bacon cupcakes and wanted to let you know I ran across a bottle of Torani Bacon Flavored Syrup the other day, World Market, i think, if you’re interested in trying another route!

By the way, have you tried the new Birthday Cake Oreos yet? They’re YUMMY! I would like to send you a package with a donation if you email me your address.

  16. @lydia- if you look a couple post down where I made Rice Krispie Treats with the Birthday Cake Oreos…I know them well. :) A little too well. :P

  17. I’d give up cookies, chocolate and ice cream before I’d give up bacon! No really, I would!
